Alekhine Memorial Tournament 1971

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1971 Alekhine Memorial Tournament - a chess tournament - took place in Moscow from November 24, 1971 to December 18, 1971 . It was dedicated to the former world chess champion Alexander Alekhine .

For the 20-year-old Anatoly Karpov, the youth world champion in 1969, the triumph at the Alekhine commemorative tournament was the first victory in a major international tournament. He remained undefeated and even left the reigning world champion Boris Spassky well behind. For this it was the last tournament participation before his title fight in 1972 against Bobby Fischer. Other (former) world champions in the field: Wassili Smyslow, Tigran Petrosjan and Michail Tal. After that, a performance explosion was observed at Karpow: Almost two years later he already had an Elo rating of 2630 and two years later he succeeded Bobby Fischer as world champion.
