Alcohol powder

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alcohol powder , also called dry alcohol , is a powder containing ethanol . It consists of dextrins that are soaked in ethanol. Dissolving it in water creates an alcoholic drink. Other possible uses include adding to desserts or solid medicines. Since the development, alcohol powder products have been brought onto the market several times without, however, becoming widespread.

development

In 1974, General Foods Corporation was first granted a patent on an alcohol-containing powder in the United States . In 2005 Stiftung Warentest tested the German product Subyou .

In June 2007, Dutch students announced that they had developed an alcohol powder called Booz2go , which when dissolved in water makes a drink with a lime flavor and color and an alcohol content of three percent. Both Jost-Henner Nies, the manufacturer of Subyou , and the Dutch students indicate young people as a target group. Harm van Elderen said in an interview with Reuters : “We target young people. They are more interested because you can compare it [the alcohol powder] with Bacardi mix drinks ”. The American company Lipsmark, on the other hand, claims that its product, called Palcohol , is primarily aimed at athletes and travelers who do not want to transport heavy glass bottles. However, intensive advertising was directed at a young target group. The approval for the alcohol powder was first granted in 2014 by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) of the USA, but then withdrawn.

Another alcohol powder (also called vodka powder in press reports at the time) was developed in Russia in 2010, mainly for use in veterinary medicine, as animals often do not consume alcohol-containing drugs in liquid form voluntarily. It was also suitable for human consumption, but was not marketed for the same.

Legal issues

The legal assessment of powders containing alcohol has not yet been clarified. In Germany, the main criticism is that alcohol powder circumvents the spirits tax , the special levy on alcopops and the beverage deposit, and that young people in particular are at high risk of abuse. Legal restrictions on the distribution or dispensing of alcoholic beverages generally only apply to liquids. In most countries, powder-based alcohol could even be sold to young people and would not be affected by alcohol taxes. In the USA, alcohol powder has been used as a flavoring for puddings and ice cream. However, a US manufacturer is preparing a range of alcohol powdered drinks that are subject to normal alcohol laws.
