Allée couverte du Câtillon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Allée couverte du Câtillon that went out was in the “Bois de la Grosse Roche” in the north of the hamlet of Câtillon in Rocheville , on the Cotentin peninsula in the Manche department in Normandy in France . The gallery tomb was only a few hundred meters from the Allée couverte de la petite Roche and 1500 meters from the Allée couverte de la Forge .

Pierre Le Fillastre stated a length of about 17 m and a height of one meter. Many bearing stones were removed; 32 remained at the beginning of the 20th century. At the southwest end the gallery was open, but some stones were placed inside to block access. The northwest end was closed off by a large flat vertical stone. There was a gap behind the stone that closed off the gallery. The five misplaced capstones were 1.5 to 2.4 m long. According to Le Fillastre, the gallery differed from others of its kind by a dolmen at the northeastern end. It consisted of two large side stones that supported a large in-situ capstone with a flattened tip. The dolmen was open to the northeast. Its length was about 2.1 m, its width 0.95 and its height 1.25 m.

Its description was not changed by Léon Coutil , although in 1896 he noted the collapse of part of the monument. In 1905 the dolmen part seems to have disappeared because Coutil no longer reports on it. In 1929 he realizes that there is only one ceiling slab in the northwest and another at the other end. There is no doubt that it is not a neighboring dolmen, as Le Fillastre thought, but an antechamber separated from the main chamber by a vertical plate.

context

This type of gallery tomb with antechamber and / or end cell is found more frequently in Brittany and develops in the 3rd millennium. Here, engravings were often found on the supporting stones of the end cells.

The gallery tomb seems to have never been examined. No finds are reported. The neighboring Allée couverte from Tourlaville also started out .
