Léon Coutil

Léon Coutil (born October 13, 1856 in Les Andelys or Villers-en-Vexin , Département Eure ; † January 25, 1943 in Saint-Pierre-du-Vauvray , Eure) was a French artist, prehistorian and archaeologist .

Life

Coutil was born in 1856 in the hamlet of Villers sur Andelys in Les Andelys or Villers-en-Vexin. From 1878 to 1882 he was a student of Jean-Léon Gérôme at the State College of Fine Arts in Paris . From 1880 to 1889 he exhibited portraits and etchings in the Salon de Paris . In 1882 he returned to Les Andelys and began to be interested in archeology.

Coutil was the curator of the first museum in Les Andelys and collected artifacts from the Old and New Stone Age and the Gallo-Roman period , some of which are now exhibited in the new Nicolas-Poussin Museum in the Léon Coutil room . Parts of the collection are exhibited in the museums of Toulouse , Évreux and Louviers . He carried out excavations in Pîtres (Eure) and found Gallo-Roman thermal baths and an ancient theater there . In Incarville (Eure) he discovered a Gallo-Roman villa .

In 1904 Coutil founded the learned society Société préhistorique française ('French Society for Prehistory'). He was a member of the Société normande d'études préhistoriques ('Norman Society for Prehistoric Studies') as well as various other learned societies. He inventoried archaeological finds from Normandy and made drawings that are still considered important documents today. His most important work was the inventory of the finds from the tumulus of La Hogue in Fontenay-le-Marmion ( Department Manche ). For his achievements, he was appointed correspondant du Ministère de l'Instruction publique (about 'corresponding member of the Ministry of Education ').
