All-Amhara People's Organization

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The All-Amhara People's Organization (abbreviation amharic መአሕድ , English All Amhara People's Organization , abbreviation AAPO ) is an ethnic-based nationalist party in the Amhara region , an ethnically defined region in Ethiopia .

The All-Amhara people's organization campaigns for the Amhars' right to self-determination and tries to defend their rights. The party's membership base consists mainly of Shewa- Amhars (Shewa is the former province in the vicinity of the capital Addis Ababa). The All-Amhara people's organization is strictly against the regionalization of Ethiopia and fears the collapse of the former Amharic-dominated empire. In contrast, the All-Amhara people's organization supports the unity of Ethiopia and rejects the independence of Eritrea as well as the policy of federalization.

The party was founded in 1999 by Professor Asrat Woldeys and officially registered on December 10, 2002. Former chairman Asrat Woldeys was imprisoned from 1994 to the end of 1998 on a conviction for "calling for armed resistance". He died in the United States on May 14, 1999.

The current chairman is Ato Shewangizaw Gebre Silassie . In the national legislative parliamentary elections in Ethiopia in 2005 on May 15, the All-Amhara People's Organization joined the Oromo National Congress and the Democratic Alliance of the Peoples of South Ethiopia as a member party of the United Ethiopian Democratic Forces , an electoral alliance which together made up 52 of the total 527 seats in the People's House of Representatives (the lower house of the Ethiopian Parliament ).
