Allan Marat

Allan Marat (born September 28, 1954 ) is a Papua New Guinean politician . He was Minister of Justice and Attorney General in the government of Prime Minister Michael Somare from August 2007 to May 2010.

From August 5, 2002 to November 12, 2003, Marat was Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Governor General in 2008. "Until his overthrow in early October 2003, Marat was leader of the People's Progress Party . He is now a member of the Melanesian Liberal Party .

In May 2010, Allan Marat was critical of the benefits of a major gas production project for the population and local businesses, and of Somares' plans to deprive a widely respected ombudsman commission of fighting corruption. Michael Somare told him to resign immediately, which he did. As a result of the resignation, Marat informed Somare that his Melanesian Liberal Party would sever “relations with the government”. He was replaced as Attorney General and Minister of Justice by Ano Pala . In August 2011, following the election of Peter O'Neill as Prime Minister, Marat was again appointed Attorney General and Attorney General. Marat was arrested along with Deputy Prime Minister Belden Namah on November 14, 2011 by order of the Supreme Court. They were charged with obstructing an investigation into the misappropriation of court funds.

Marat was the first Papuan New Guinean to earn a Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Oxford .
