Allan Stewart ( June 1, 1942 - December 7, 2016 ) was a Scottish politician.

Political career

Since 1924 the Unionist Party / Conservative Party provided the constituency MP for East Renfrewshire . After Betty Harvie Anderson did not run for the 1979 general election, Stewart ran for the Conservatives for the constituency mandate. On election day, Stewart was able to prevail clearly against his three opponents with a share of the vote of 49.9% and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time .

In the course of the constituency reform in the run-up to the 1983 elections , the constituency was dissolved. For this reason, Stewart ran in the newly created constituency of Eastwood , in which large parts of East Renfrewshire were taken. He won the mandate and defended it in the following elections in 1987 and 1992. Most recently, Stewart was employed in the Scottish Office as Secretary of State for Economics and Transport. An incident in which he threatened protesters against the expansion of the M77 in Glasgow with a pickaxe received extensive media coverage . After his health deteriorated in the spring of 1997, he announced that he would not run for any further term. At the end of the term, he left the House of Commons. A total of 8,406 contributions by Stewart are recorded in Parliament.

In the 1997 general election that followed , the Conservatives sent Paul Cullen into the race, who was defeated by Labor candidate Jim Murphy .
