Allen Rivkin

Allen Rivkin (born November 20, 1903 in Hayward , Wisconsin , † February 17, 1990 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American screenwriter .

biography

Allen Rivkin studied journalism at the University of Minnesota and then worked as a reporter for a while. In 1923 he moved to Hollywood, where he worked as a studio electrician for a while before becoming press secretary for RKO Pictures . His first major success as a writer was in 1930 when he published the play Is My Face Red with Ben Markson . With the filming of the play in 1932, Rivkin's screenwriting career began at the same time. He was a contract writer for 20th Century Fox from 1935 to 1939 and for MGM from 1949 to 1953 .

In 1933 Rivkin co-founded the Screen Writers Guild and became one of the first nine board members. By 1938 he was able to assert himself with this organization against the competition of Screen Playwrights Inc. supported by the film studios . The SWG later became part of the Writers Guild of America . Rivkin remained committed and was responsible for both the members' magazine and press relations as director from 1963 to 1989.

On February 17, 1990, after a year of illness, Rivkin died of kidney failure at his home in West Hollywood at the age of 86 . He left behind his wife, screenwriter Laura Kerr , who died in 1991, a daughter and three grandchildren.
