history

A survey by the State of Salzburg revealed the need to create auxiliary schools and institutions for disabled people. The chairman of the Caritas Association of Salzburg , Franz Fiala, bought with foreign help in August 1921 the Traunergut in Hundsdorf near Bruck im Pinzgau, located next to the Franciscan monastery of St. Anton im Pinzgau, including the associated agriculture and set up a place for mentally handicapped children who were Vöcklabruck Franciscan Sisters were looked after. The Franciscans took over pastoral care for the sisters and religious instruction for the children. After difficult adaptation work, the first pupils were accepted into the home and school in the spring of 1923. This was the first children's village in Austria. 33 children were taught in the private aid school in Hundsdorf. In March 1925 she was granted public rights. The Caritas Association Salzburg gradually acquired the other buildings in the hamlet of Hundsdorf. The resulting small village for disabled children was opened in 1931 on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the death of St. Anthony of Padua renamed St. Anton . During the National Socialist rule, the monastery was closed in July 1941 and rented out. Only one priest was allowed to remain in charge of the church in St. Anton. As part of the Nazi euthanasia, in June 1940, residents began to be picked up and taken to other institutions without any prior notice. At least 47 former residents of the former Caritas institution St. Anton fell victim to Nazi euthanasia, child euthanasia, and decentralized institutional killings. Every 10th resident who was admitted from 1923 to August 1944 was murdered. After the Second World War, the monastery was returned to the Franciscans. In 1952, 88 students were taught. In August 1954 the private auxiliary school in St. Anton was declared a public special school by resolution of the Salzburg state parliament.
