Alloiopteris is a genus from the order of the primitive ferns , Zygopteridales .
features
Fossils of sterile leaves are grouped together in the genus Alloiopteris . The species all have leaflets, the leaflets of which are sloping down at the base and which have clear apical lobes or teeth. Fossils with internal anatomy have been preserved from the Caseyville Formation in the Lower Pennsylvania of Illinois. Their characteristics indicate a connection with Zygopteris .
The vascular bundle of the primary leaflet has a butterfly shape in cross-section, while the vascular bundle of the leaflets are circular.
Alloiopteris sternbergii has also been found on Etapteris leaf units . The fact that Etapteris has different leaf shapes shows the difficulty of characterizing many of the Paleozoic ferns solely on the basis of their petiole anatomy.
Systematics and distribution
Alloiopteris is placed in the order Zygopteridales. It includes around 10 species.
