Almannaskarð is a pass at 153 m above sea level on the ring road in southeast Iceland . It is located about 15 km east of Höfn in the direction of Egilsstaðir . With a gradient of 17%, it was the steepest section of the Ringstrasse. Between 2004 and 2005 a 1312 m long, two-lane tunnel, the Almannaskarðsgöng, was built . The Ringstrasse now runs through it. The pass road has been closed since the tunnel was opened. From the eastern side there is the possibility to drive up to the top of the pass to a parking lot.
