Almindingen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Almindingen is a forest in the center of the Danish island of Bornholm . With around 3,800 hectares, it is one of the largest forest areas in Denmark . The forest was created in the first half of the 19th century. Before this was generally accessible pastureland; hence the name that corresponds to the German commons . In Almindingen are some of the Bornholmer sights, such as the Spalttal Ekkodalen , Bornholm highest mountain Rytterknægten and castles Gamleborg and Lilleborg .

In June 2012, seven bison from the Białowieża National Park in Poland were released in a 200 hectare fenced area in Almindingen, around the Svinemosen . It is part of the Danish nature conservation project for the conservation of the globally threatened species, to which the bison are included ( IUCN Red List ). With the release of the bison and their behavior, such as grazing, gnawing on tree bark and trampling, a dynamic emerges among the plants, trees and soil in the forest, which creates new habitats for plants, animal and bird species (according to the description of the location in the entrance area of the site ). The bison have now increased to 15 animals (as of 2018). In 2018 the Danish government decided that the bison would stay on Bornholm permanently.
