Alois Broger

Alois Broger (born January 5, 1811 in Appenzell ; † November 17, 1879 there ) was a Swiss Catholic-Conservative politician . He represented the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden both in the Council of States and in the National Council .

biography

The son of the landlord Franz Anton Broger and Josepha Rusch worked as a cloth merchant. He graduated from the Latin school in Appenzell and the grammar schools in Fischingen , Einsiedeln and Friborg . In 1858 he was a co-founder of “Der Sentis”, the first newspaper in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden . In 1870 he founded the Catholic journeyman's association, in 1876 both the newspaper “ Appenzeller Volksfreund ” and the rural savings and loan fund.

Broger was a leading Catholic Conservative. In 1846 the local community elected him to the ethics committee, the Innerrhoder cantonal government . He initially acted as witness and from 1847 to 1849 as client. In 1859 he returned to the government, this time as governor. From 1865 until his death he was finally Landammann . At the federal level, he represented his canton in the Council of States from 1860 to 1865, then in the National Council until 1879.
