In 1842 he was ordained a priest in Rottenburg am Neckar and was transferred to Rottweil as vicar . In 1844, after several assignments as a parish administrator, he received the post of repetition at the Konvikt in Rottweil. In March 1848 he was appointed parish priest in Isny im Allgäu .

During the revolution, Bendel headed the Catholic clergy in the district and rejected allegations by the Volksverein because of the clergy's negative attitude towards the imperial constitution. In May 1850 he was appointed director of the Wilhelmsstift Tübingen and at the same time assistant teacher for pastoral theology at the Catholic theological faculty of the University of Tübingen . In 1863, Bendel returned to his homeland in Upper Swabia as the town pastor in Wangen im Allgäu and dean of the country chapter of Wangen. In 1866 he was appointed cathedral capitular and in 1879 also cathedral dean in Rottenburg am Neckar.

politics

In the summer of 1849 he decided to run for a mandate in the constitution-revising state assembly , which had replaced the old state parliament. Competitors included Wilhelm Wiest , the district's previous member of the state parliament. He won the mandate with 1,373 votes. Bendel was also successful against competitor Anton Hetzel from Spaichingen in the election of the state assembly advising the constitution in February 1850.

From February 6, 1877 to June 25, 1880, he was again a member of the second chamber of the Württemberg state parliament as a representative of the episcopal cathedral chapter. He resigned because of hearing impairment. His successor as representative of the cathedral chapter was the later Rottenburg bishop Wilhelm von Reiser .
