Alonso Gómez-Robledo

Alonso Gómez-Robledo Verduzco (born  August 11, 1949 in Washington, DC ) is a Mexican lawyer . He has been a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea since 2014 .

Life

Born to Mexican parents, Gómez-Robledo received his university education at the National Autonomous University of Mexico , where he first studied philosophy from 1970 . In 1974 he graduated there with a law degree . During his studies he worked at the chair of Jorge Carpizo McGregor . He then did his PhD for three years at the Geneva University Institute for International Studies . After returning to his homeland in 1978, he received a call to a professorship in international law at his alma mater . In addition to this activity, which Gómez-Robledo continues to this day, he has already held various visiting professorships. For example, he taught at the University of Texas – Pan American and is involved in diplomatic training. At the international level, he made his first appearance as a member of the Mexican delegation in the negotiations for the Convention on the Law of the Sea from 1978 to 1982. Since then he has advised the government of his home country on issues of international law on several occasions. Between November 1988 and July 1990 he also worked for the Permanent Mission of Mexico to UNESCO in Paris . Since 2001 he has also been a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague .
