The Aloysius Chapel is a chapel in Daleiden in the Eifel district of Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate , which is named after Saint Aloisius von Gonzaga . The historicizing hall building with roof turrets built around 1900 is a listed building .

history

According to tradition, the plague also raged in Daleiden and the surrounding area in 1636 . The 13 surviving Daleidenians made the vow that, if they survived, a chapel would be built in honor of St. Aloysius and that every year on the Sunday after June 21, the anniversary of the death of St. Aloysius, a procession to the chapel would commemorate him.

The first small chapel was soon replaced by a larger one. The current building was built around 1900 from the stones of the old cemetery wall (by the church). An Aloysius brotherhood was brought into being. Over the years, not only Daleidians, but also pilgrims from neighboring communities took part in the procession. In the past there were up to 1,000 pilgrims who walked past the festively decorated houses, through the triumphal arches and then enjoyed themselves to dance music.

Shaft cross

On the outer wall of the east side of the Aloysius Chapel is a stone cross made of slate on a shaft, one of the few regional priestly grave stones with the date 1763 carved in. In addition to a skull, a chalice with the host can also be seen. It was set up in memory of Johannes Keut, a deceased priest.
