The Alpamare in Bad Tölz , Upper Bavaria , was founded in 1970 as the first surf wave pool in Germany and closed on August 30, 2015. With up to 500,000 visitors per year, the pool was one of the largest fun and adventure pools in Germany for years and was designed as a mixture of a water park based on the American model (action) and a European thermal baths (rest, relaxation).

In 1977 a sister pool of the same name was founded in Pfäffikon ( Switzerland ). In 1999 this was sold to a Spanish group of companies. There was still a cooperation between the two baths. Since 2016 there is another Alpamare in Scarborough, UK.

history

The medicinal water from the springs of the Jodquellen AG (iodine AG for short), founded in 1860, was a prerequisite for Tölz's rise to a nationally known health resort . In 1930, the then iodine source boss Anton Hoefter built the largest foyer in Europe with a length of 120 m in Bad Tölz .

On January 1, 1965, Max Hoefter took over the destiny of Jod AG. While other tourist resorts were not worried about the future during the boom in social cures, Hoefter was increasingly dissatisfied with the image of Bad Tölz, which was dominated by classic spa guests, and was looking for new concepts for young tourists and as a result founded Alpamare in 1970.

Anton Hoefter, the founder's grandson, has been CEO of Jodquellen AG since 2004.

At the beginning of 2005, plans for a thermal bath, the Mediterana on Gut Buchberg in the neighboring town of Geretsried, became known. Ultimately, the plans were abandoned. At the end of 2007, the “ Spaladin ” was another design for a bathroom in the neighboring town. According to a press report of January 13, 2013, however, "a start of construction can no longer realistically be expected."

Due to the decreasing number of visitors, Jod AG developed the concept of the "Tölzer Quellen" at the beginning of 2009, which was intended to attract more visitors through renovations. However, the project was not implemented. A hoped-for financial support for the project by the city was rejected at the end of 2009. In mid-2013, the city council decided to re-examine the possibilities of financing and a new concept that included the conversion to a pure wellness bath (without slides). During the negotiations between the city and Jod AG there were rumors about a possible closure of the bath. The negotiations failed, whereupon a referendum was initiated in March 2014 with the aim of persuading the city to invest in Alpamare. The necessary quorum for a referendum was achieved, but the city council did not allow it for legal reasons.

In June 2014 it was decided that a development plan for the area, in which the Alpamare is also located, was to be drawn up and that a change ban was imposed, so that conversions are not to be expected in the near future. On July 15, 2014 it was announced that the Hotel Jodquellenhof, which belongs to the baths, will be closed at the end of November after 125 years of operation, as there is no development perspective and the pending renovation work on the building, which was built in the mid-19th century, is no longer profitable.

After the Hotel Jodquellenhof was finally closed on December 4, 2014, the Alpamare suffered the same fate on August 30, 2015. Whether residential development will be permitted for the area is still under discussion

From February 2015 to May 2017 the former hotel, and then the former bathroom, was rented to the Bad Tölz district to accommodate asylum seekers. Since 2018, parts of the Jodquellenhof have been reopened as an inexpensive hostel , the target group are now mainly fitters and craftsmen.

Key figures

The Alpamare was operated by Alpabob GmbH & Co KG , a subsidiary of Jodquellen AG. The total area of the adventure pool was 10,000 m², including 2,100 m² of water. The Alpamare employed around 40 people and registers around 200,000 visitors per year.

Since 1997, Alpamare was the first adventure pool in Europe to be certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001 for cleaning and hygiene .

The city of Bad Tölz holds a 29% stake in Jod AG.

Offer and attractions

The Alpamare offered the usual options for an adventure pool, supplemented by offers with a thermal spa character. There was a surf wave pool, heated outdoor pool, an iodine salt thermal bath, sauna, solariums and a steam bath. The Bel'mare restaurant and the Hotel Jodquellenhof (also a subsidiary of Jodquellen AG), which is directly connected to the Alpamare, belonged to the pool .

The Alpamare was particularly known for its slide landscape, which was the largest in Germany and the largest covered (in one building) in Europe until the opening of the GALAXY of Therme Erding in May 2007. The seven different slides were one kilometer long, the longest of them 330 m. In the development of slide systems, we worked together with the Swiss sister pool in Pfäffikon, particularly in the area of theming.

The indoor surfing facility Endless Peak was unique in Europe . It was the first permanently installed indoor surfing system in the world and until recently was one of only two systems of this type in Germany. We surfed on bodyboards and stand-up boards lying down, kneeling and standing. Surf tournaments were held regularly.

The iodine brine thermal bath , a 200 m² large and 34 ° C warm outdoor pool, has been operated with water from a natural Tölzer iodine source since July 2007. The guests should recharge their batteries under the motto green energy . According to the operators, the water should reduce the release of stress hormones, alleviate joint problems and lower high blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Awards

In April 2006 the Alpamare was awarded the Parkscout Award 2005/2006 as the best water park.

"For its pioneering achievements and innovation leadership in leisure pools", as the reason given, the Alpamare received the Industry Leadership Award from the World Waterpark Association in October 2007 .

film records

Scenes were filmed in the Alpamare for several episodes of the crime series Der Bulle von Tölz .
