Infrastructure

Night skiing at the Alpensia Resort

Alpensia has six slopes for skiers and snowboarders. The ski slopes are up to 1.4 kilometers long, with slopes for beginners and advanced skiers as well as a separate area for snowboarders. The resort is open all year round. In the off-season, the lower area of the slopes is transformed into a flower garden.

The slopes are named after the spelling alphabet : Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo and Foxtrot. They close between 4.30 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. for maintenance work. Night skiing is possible between 6.30 p.m. and 10 p.m.

From Alpensia, it takes five to ten minutes by car to get to the Yongpyong Ski Resort , a larger winter sports area.

Three large hotel chains offer accommodation in the village of the Alpensia Resort: InterContinental Hotels Group , Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Suites.

history

The decision to build Alpensia was made in 2003 when Gangwon Province applied for the 2010 Winter Olympics . The resort was built on former agricultural land and potato fields. In 2011 the development was completed.

In 2013 the Alpensia Resort was one of the venues for the Special Olympics Winter Games in Pyeongchang.

Alpensia also has an Olympic village . In the nearby Yongpyong Ski Resort , the technical disciplines in alpine skiing ( slalom , giant slalom and the team competition ) were held. Cultural events were held during the games in a new concert hall in the resort.

Shortly after the Olympic Games, the corresponding competitions for the 2018 Winter Paralympics took place at the competition venues .

Financial problems

In 2012 it was announced that the Alpensia Resort was threatened with bankruptcy because of annual losses of 55 million US dollars . Although Kim Jin-sun of the Organizing Committee of the 2018 Winter Olympics (POCOG) denied this in January 2013, the financial situation had not improved by September 2013. Some Gangwon members of Congress approved the sale of Alpensia before it was too late. Others advocated either asking the government for financial support or not hosting the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
