Location and origin
The lake is located in the district of Nöda , north of Erfurt , the capital of Thuringia . The water can be reached via the A 71 motorway and the Erfurt east bypass. The lake, around 1400 meters long, was created from a gravel pit . This was operated from 1969 as the Alperstedt gravel works by the then Sömmerda building materials combine. From 1990 to 2005 the raw materials were extracted by Kies und Beton GmbH Erfurt. The renaturation of the northern bank is not expected until 2018, as it is still used for processing gravel from the Pfaffenstiegsee.
