Alpha Boys School
Alpha Cottage School (often called Alpha Boys School ) is a school on South Camp Road in Kingston , Jamaica run by Catholic nuns . The school was founded in 1880 as the school for wayward boys ("School for bad boys "). She was known for both strict upbringing and excellent music teaching. The school has had its own music band since 1892, and later a brass band following a donation of brass instruments by the Catholic Bishop of Kingston . This musical direction of the school also had an influence on the development of reggae .
Well-known students at the school were Desmond Dekker , four founding members of the Skatalites : Tommy McCook, Johnny "Dizzy" Moore , Lester Sterling and Don Drummond , as well as Rico Rodriguez , Yellowman , Vin Gordon, Harold McNair , the saxophonists Joe Harriott , Cedric Brooks and Wilton Gaynair , "Deadly" Headley Bennett and singer Leroy Smart.
The Bochum ska band Alpha Boy School named itself after the school.
