The Alpha Island ( English Alpha Iceland ) is a small island in the Palmer Archipelago off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . It lies in the group of Melchior Islands between the Epsilon and the Delta Islands .
Scientists from the British Discovery Investigations mapped them in 1928 and named them after the Greek letter alpha in connection with the naming of the other islands in the group . The alpha island was measured as part of Argentine expeditions in 1942, 1943 and 1948. In Argentina , the island is known as Isla Huidobro , whose namesake is the Argentine independence fighter Pascual Ruiz Huidobro (1752-1813).
