Alphonse Choteau

Alphonse Paul Albert Choteau (born May 28, 1883 in Marly-le-Roi , † May 29, 1936 in Réunion ) was a French colonial administrator. He was governor of Niger , Guadeloupe and Réunion.

Life

Alphonse Choteau attended the École coloniale in Paris . In 1906 he started working for the colonial administration in French West Africa . He participated in the First World War as an infantry officer. As the successor to Jules Brévié , he was appointed governor of the colony of Niger, which belongs to French West Africa, in 1930. In the same year he was appointed governor of Guadeloupe. He held this office until 1934 when he became governor of Réunion. On the occasion of the parliamentary elections of 1936 there were violent riots with several dead. Choteau was last seriously ill and died the day after his 53rd birthday. His remains were transferred to Valenciennes .
