Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr (born November 24, 1808 in Paris , † September 29, 1890 in Saint-Raphaël ) was a French journalist, writer and satirist .

life and work

Karr's first novel Sous les Tilleuls ( Unter den Linden ) was published in 1832. Karr was one of the first to popularize the Normandy coast . He was particularly taken with Étretat , where his novel Le chemin le plus court ( The Shortest Path , 1837) also takes place.

Alphonse Karr founded the satirical magazine Les Guêpes ( The Wasps ), which appeared between 1839 and 1876. As a bitter opponent of Napoléon III. after the coup d'état of 1851 he went into exile in Nice . His work Les Willis (1835) was the model for Le Villi , Giacomo Puccini's first opera (1884). In 1882 Karr became the first incumbent president of the Ligue populaire contre la vivisection , founded by Marie-Françoise Bernard and Helena, Comtesse de Noailles , which campaigned against animal experiments .

Alphonse Karr spent his last years in Saint-Raphaël on the Côte d'Azur , where he devoted himself intensively to horticulture and the cultivation of flowers. Therefore, the establishment of the Flower Riviera is ascribed to him. He died there on September 29, 1890 at the age of almost 82. In his honor, two plants were posthumously named after him: the indoor bamboo "Bambus multiplex Alphonse Karr" and a pear .
