Alphonse Leveaux

Alphonse Leveaux (born April 25, 1810 in Paris , † February 10, 1893 in Compiègne ) was a French writer and literary historian.

life and work

Leveaux, friend of Eugène Labiche since his youth , with whom he went on a trip to Italy, was one of the numerous co-authors of his plays, but took the pseudonym "Alphonse Jolly" until 1869 (to avoid the puny Labiche / Leveaux = La biche / Le veau) " on. In 1852 he settled in Compiègne, became director of the Musée Antoine Vivenel and municipal alderman (from 1875 to 1876 also alternatively mayor). He worked as an assistant librarian (alongside Jean-Joseph-François Pellassy de L'Ousle) at Compiègne Castle and wrote books on Montaigne , La Fontaine , Molière , and on the French theater of the 19th century.
