Alphonse Thommen

Paul Alphonse Thommen (born February 10, 1864 in Waldenburg BL ; † November 13, 1944 in Môtiers NE) was an entrepreneur from Waldenburg in the Swiss canton of Basel-Landschaft .

Life

family

Alphonse Thommen was the son of the entrepreneur Gédéon Thommen (1831–1890) and Marie-Louise Jacot-Baron (1836–1895) from Le Locle. He had eight siblings. After primary school in Waldenburg and schools in Basel , he completed an apprenticeship as a precision mechanic in Môtiers. For further training he was in companies in Waldenburg, Moutier and Geneva . In Neuhausen he trained as a blacksmith.

In his first marriage he married Hélène-Marie Jeanrenaud von Môtiers in 1889. They had a son named Eric. His second marriage was in 1915 with Berta Meier from Zurich .

From 1906 until his death, Thommen lived in Môtiers in the Val-de-Travers .

military

In the Swiss military he reached the rank of major in the infantry . He became a battalion commander .

economy

From 1891 to 1906 he was a member of the board of directors of the Waldenburgerbahn . He acted as a censor at the Basellandschaftliche Kantonalbank (BLKB).

Career

In 1889 he took over the duties of chief mechanic in the Gédéon Thommen watch factory . After his father's death in December 1890, he took over the company and was able to expand it steadily. In 1892 he founded a factory for the manufacture of watch components and screws. The Tschudin & Heid company was founded in 1900 from this company.

In 1905 the Gédéon Thommen watch factory was converted into a stock company and the name was changed to Thommens Uhrenfabrik AG . Alphons Thommen took over the office of President on the Board of Directors until 1932. Then his brother-in-law Hermann Straumann took over the chairmanship and management of the company's fortunes. Thommen remained on the Board of Directors as a delegate until 1944. The Thommens Uhrenfabrik AG changed into Revue Thommen AG in 1987 .
