Hermann Straumann

Hermann Straumann (born July 14, 1862 in Waldenburg BL ; † November 1, 1948 ibid) was a Swiss doctor and politician from Waldenburg in the canton of Basel-Landschaft .

Life

family

Hermann Straumann was the son of Jakob Straumann (1821–1898) (innkeeper of the Gasthof zum Schlüssel in Waldenburg, cooper and farmer) and Anna Roth (1822–1877) from Reigoldswil . After primary school in Waldenburg and schools in Basel, he studied from 1880 at the universities of Basel , Bern and Paris . In 1887 he married Fanny Mathilde Thommen von Waldenburg. They had four children: Kurt (1889–1923), Susanna (1897–1986), Roland (1899–1999) and Peter (1901–1959).

medicine

In 1887 he completed his state examination with a doctorate . He ran his own medical practice in Waldenburg . From 1893 to 1941 he was a medical councilor . From 1894 to 1918 he was a member of the hospital commission. Straumann was an internationally recognized cynologist .

military

In the Swiss military he achieved the rank of colonel in the medical units . He was the deputy chief medical officer. During the First World War , Straumann campaigned for the exchange of wounded and captured German and French soldiers.

politics

Straumann was the leader of the district administration party, the «Left Freisinn». From 1891 to 1932 he was a district administrator in Basel . In 1897/1898, 1906/1907, and 1914/1915 he was district administrator. He was in the National Council from 1911 to 1919. From 1933 to 1944 he was president of the primary and district school administration in Waldenburg.

economy

In 1898, Straumann co-founded the Landschäftler & Co. book printing company in Liestal. He was President of the non-profit Baselland Society (GGB) from 1897 to 1907. From 1905, Straumann was a member of the Board of Directors of Thommens Uhrenfabrik AG , in Waldenburg. From 1932 to 1944 he was its Chairman of the Board of Directors.

He was chairman of the board of directors from 1914 to 1942 and chairman of the board of directors of Waldenburgerbahn (WB) from 1923 to 1942 . He was also on the board of directors of the Birsigtalbahn (BTB) and the Basellandschaftliche Hypothekenbank . From 1933 to 1944 he was president of the Waldenburg district's poor education association .

Honor

As a thank you for his services to the Waldenburgerbahn, he was made honorary president in 1942.
