Alt-Marl is the oldest district of the North Rhine-Westphalian city ​​of Marl in the Recklinghausen district . The historic city center is around the St. Georg church . Alt-Marl has 9,747 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018).

Alt-Marl borders in the north on the city center of Marl and Brassert and in the west on the rural Polsum in the east are the district of Drewer and the village of Steinernkreuz . In the south lies the city ​​of Herten .

Culture and sights

  • In the 11th century, the Catholic Church of St. Georg was owned by Count Balderich of the Lower Rhine as a separate church . In the 13th century it became a parish church and in the years 1856–1859 it was completely renovated according to plans by Emil von Manger , only the Romanesque foundation walls of the tower from the 12th century remained as the foundation. On November 9, 1944, the church was badly damaged in an air raid.
  • The town and local history museum in the restored watermill at Volkspark is located in the building that was first mentioned in documents in 1415 as the "old mill". The mill was in operation until 1927.
