Alt St. Martinus is the former Roman Catholic parish church of Stommeln , a district of the city of Pulheim ( Rhein-Erft district ) in North Rhine-Westphalia . The church is located in the middle of a cemetery on a hill to the west of the town center and the new parish church of Neu St. Martinus.

history

In 961, Archbishop Bruno I confirmed the possession of St. Martin's Church to the Cäcilienstift in Cologne . The right of collation remained with the Cäcilienstift until secularization .

The oldest part of the church is the essentially Romanesque tower from around 1100. The nave and the raised choir are late Gothic and were completed in 1540, the aisles in 1553. The late Gothic conversions show the alternation of tuff and brick bands typical for the region, such as St. Cosmas and Damian in Glesch or St. Martinus in Nettesheim . After a fire, the tower was raised in 1677.

Use as a concert venue

Since 1999 the church has been used as a venue for the concert series Raumklänge by the city of Pulheim . Since then, concerts of contemporary music have been held annually. Well-known musicians who performed in the church include Markus Stockhausen (2009), Olaf Tzschoppe (2010), Phil Niblock (2013), Ben Patterson (2014) and the Ensemble Musikfabrik (2016).
