The Romanesque cemetery chapel Alt St. Mauritius is the preserved part of the former parish church of Buchheim , which was incorporated into Cologne in 1914 . It is located in the Sonderburger Strasse cemetery .

history

The church is first mentioned around 1160 as a parish church belonging to Deutz Abbey . The remainder preserved today is dated to around 1200. During the Truchsessian War in 1583, the sacred building was severely devastated. In the course of the reconstruction work, the two transept arms were added from 1586 to 1593 . In 1795, French troops used the church as a magazine , which led to its extensive destruction. Since the building could no longer be used afterwards, the parish rights were transferred to St. Clemens in Mülheim. The ruin was finally rebuilt as a cemetery chapel in 1849 . From 1928 to 1929 it was given its present form. After being destroyed again in the war in 1943 and 1944, the chapel was restored from 1950 to 1952.

The most important remnant of the Romanesque church is the simple semicircular apse , which shows seven flat arched panels on a high sill , in which there are three small Romanesque windows, of which the middle one is walled up. In the interior, the apse shows four small columns with fine late Romanesque leaf capitals, corresponding to the panel structure of the exterior .
