Altas Montañas del Estado de Veracruz
Altas Montañas del Estado de Veracruz is a high mountain range in the Mexican state of Veracruz , which belongs to the Sierra Madre Oriental . It is one of the areas with the greatest biodiversity and the most beautiful landscapes in Mexico.
Location and prominent points
The region of the Altas Montañas begins in the north at the places Coscomatepec and Huatusco , both of which are located in a cloud forest .
At the southern end of the region are the mysterious mountains of Zongolica .
In the northwest of the Altas Montañas is the Citlaltépetl (Pico de Orizaba), Mexico's highest mountain.
The main municipalities in the region are the cities of Orizaba and Córdoba .
Also in the region are:
- an extensive tunnel system from the 18th century;
- the Cerro de Chicahuaxtla , which is a popular place for paragliding ;
- the Puente de Aguila and the Puente de Metlac , from which it is possible to rappel down into the valley;
- the area around Orizaba ;
- the hinterland of Córdoba and
- the Sierra de Zongolica , whose caves are among the deepest in the world.
