The Altausseer Kirtag (also: "Altausseer Kiritåg" or "Altausseer Kiritåg Bierzelt") is one of the largest Kirtage in Austria with around 20,000 visitors annually . It takes place every year on the first weekend in September at Fischererfeld in the Styrian community of Altaussee . Since 1961 the Kirtag has been organized by the Altaussee Volunteer Fire Brigade on the day of the consecration of St. Giles , the patron of the Altaussee parish church .

history

In 1960 the Altaussee firefighter Franz Pucher and the musician Engelbert Köberl came back from Upper Austria with the idea that they could also realize the local Kirtagsbierzelt in Altaussee. After discussions in the committee of the local fire brigade, it was decided to organize such a beer tent on the "Mescht'n-Anger" at the beginning of September 1961. The beer tent was built from material from the volunteer fire brigade riders. The first beer tent was a complete success - the turnover of 47,000  schillings exceeded all expectations. At the request of the hotelier Franz Frischmuth, for whom the tent was too close to his property, the tent was moved to the Fischerwiese, where it still takes place today. In the following years, the rush of guests grew more and more, and the number of stands also increased. In the first forty years around a million pints of beer and 180,000 poultry were sold. Most of the economic share benefits domestic suppliers. Today around 20,000 visitors visit the beer tent festival every year and the festival is supported by around 300 volunteers.

According to the company, the main contributors to the success of this festival are the free entry, the good quality of the drinks and food, and the low prices. The festival was also able to increase its popularity due to the lack of a dance floor and loudspeaker music. The beer has been supplied by the Göss brewery in Leoben since 1963 .

Media reports and literature

Due to the high number of visitors, the Kirtag is often mentioned in the media, for example in the Kleine Zeitung , in Puls 4 or on ORF .

Herbert Dutzler chose the Kirtag as the crime scene for his crime thriller in his Altaussee crime thriller “Last Kirtag”, published in 2011.
