Årdal old church

The Årdal Old Church (Norwegian Årdal gamle kirke ) is a Norwegian Renaissance church .

The church is located in Årdal in Hjelmeland municipality , Rogaland province in Norway . It is an important wooden Renaissance church in Vestlandet . It was built in three stages and completed in 1620.

The church has 250 seats. The interior is decorated with richly painted decorations. The typical Norwegian rose paintings are primarily to be seen. The pulpit and the altar panel were painted by the church painter Gottfried Hendtzschel . The names of the rich families of the area are still carved into the front pews. The not-so-affluent people sat on the back benches.

In 1919 a new church was built in Årdal. The old church was preserved and is a listed building. It is still used today, especially in summer.
