Old Mint (Minden)

The old coin

The Alte Münze is a building in the East Westphalian city of Minden in North Rhine-Westphalia . It was built around the year 1260. The house is considered the oldest stone house in Westphalia .

The three-story house is built from sandstone blocks. It is provided with a stepped gable and Gothic tracery windows from the 13th century. They were only exposed in 1928. In a phase of renovation at the beginning of the 17th century, the building was given a late Renaissance opening and a portal.

For a long time it was assumed that this building used to be the mint in Minden, as many coins were found there. Today, however, this is considered unlikely, since the production of coins required flowing water. It is therefore believed that this was the mint master's apartment from the 14th to the 16th centuries.

Today there is a restaurant in the building, which is also called "Alte Münze".
