The old government in the city of Opole was a state administration building of the administrative district of Opole or the province of Silesia , which was built between 1830 and 1833. It was on the government square (Annabergplatz), today's Plac Wolności . It was destroyed in 1945 and then demolished.

The administrative district of Opole was created in 1816. Initially, the district government worked in the Jesuit college and in the Dominican monastery, but after a few years there was a need for additional premises. In 1823 the first drafts for the construction of a new, larger administration building were made, but these were rejected by the central authorities in Berlin. A counter-draft prepared there was approved. This envisaged a three-story building, but the costs turned out to be too high. In a cabinet resolution of November 11, 1824, only the purchase of building materials and the acquisition of land were therefore initially approved.

Before starting the masonry work, the building site had to be prepared. Since the property had formerly belonged to the trench of the city fortifications, it had to be excavated 7 m deep until a load-bearing ground was reached for the foundation. The laying of the foundation stone of the building, built in the classical style, was celebrated on May 17, 1830. In 1832, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the highest Prussian construction officer, visited the construction site during his visit to Opole. In 1833 the building could be occupied. At the same time, the square in front of it, the government square, was also completed. In 1891 a Kaier Kaiser Wilhelm monument was erected in front of the building.

In the period from February 11, 1920 to July 10, 1922, it was the seat of the Inter-Allied Government and Plebiscite Commission for Upper Silesia .

Between 1930 and 1934 a new government building was built on the Pascheke , as the old building was no longer sufficient.

Towards the end of the Second World War , the administration building and the memorial were destroyed. The ruins were cleared in the 1950s. Today there is a park on the grounds of the old government. Today only the remnants of a cellar wall, which are decorated with a balustrade, remind of the building.
