Old Synagogue (Bingen am Rhein)
The old synagogue in Bingen am Rhein , a town in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in 1698. The former synagogue was located at Rheinstrasse 2-4. The wedding stone is now in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem .
history
In 1698 a new building was built on the site of the medieval synagogue. After a fire in 1789, the prayer room was enlarged. In 1831 the entrance was moved from Judengasse in the south to Rheinstrasse in the north. The men's area could be enlarged by installing a women 's gallery. A further expansion was made as early as 1841. In 1871 an organ and choir gallery were installed.
In the years 1903 to 1905 the New Synagogue was built in Bingen and the rituals of the old synagogue including the Torah shrine were transferred to the new synagogue.
The old synagogue building was sold, it was used as a restaurant and hotel. In 1975 the building burned down and a new building was built on the site. In 1985 the city of Bingen bought the building and had a youth house built on the property .
