The old synagogue in Ulm was built according to plans by Adolf Wolff . The inauguration took place on 12./13. September 1873. The building was destroyed in the winter of 1938/1939.

history

The building was designed in the style of historicism with neo-Islamic elements. In 1875 the interior design of the synagogue was completed with the installation of an organ by Christoph Ludwig Goll . This organ had two manuals and 20 stops. The cost was 4,855 guilders.

In the 1920s, the " orientalizing " synagogue building with its "shiny gold" domes was perceived as too "foreign". Therefore, in 1928 the orientalizing roofscape of the synagogue was changed by the Jewish architect Ernst Guggenheimer . The Moorish domes were replaced by pyramid roofs. In 1937 Guggenheimer also redesigned the interior of the synagogue. The interior of the synagogue was given a new and dignified look according to the community newspaper. While maintaining the uniform color scheme of the church, an artistically impeccable solution was achieved with economical means.

By November pogroms , the synagogue was broken up on November 10 1938th For this purpose, SA men from SA Brigade 56 were brought to the Weinhof early in the morning, where several hundred people soon gathered. The Torah shrine was smashed, the large candlesticks pulled down, the carpets in front of the Torah shrine and on the gallery were lit. However, there was a risk that a neighboring paint and varnish warehouse could be affected by flying sparks. Therefore, the already present fire brigade extinguished the fire inside the synagogue with two fire engines. At 5:20 a.m. the fire was extinguished to such an extent that the fire brigade no longer needed to be present. The fire damage was minor, so the synagogue could have been restored. Nevertheless, on November 18, 1938 , the Lord Mayor of Ulm, Friedrich Foerster , requested permission from the District Administrator in Ulm to demolish the synagogue. The Jewish community had to pay for the demolition work, and it lasted from November 24, 1938 to March 1939.

In the post-war period, a building for the main office of the Sparkasse Ulm was built on the same site, which was demolished in 2012 in order to be rebuilt there enlarged. The new synagogue with community center, which was inaugurated in 2012, is located about 10 m south.
