The IRGW community center at Weinhof is the official name of the community center of the Orthodox Jewish community in Ulm . The developer and owner of the community center at Weinhof is the Israelite Religious Community of Württemberg (IRGW), based in Stuttgart .

Location and description

The community center is located in the heart of Ulm's old town in a prominent location right next to the Schwörhaus am Ulmer Weinhof and includes a synagogue , a mikveh , a community hall, a library, a kindergarten and a youth center. The building was inaugurated on December 2, 2012 (according to the Jewish calendar 18. Kislew 5773) in the presence of the German Federal President Joachim Gauck , the Israeli Ambassador to Germany Yakov Hadas-Handelsman , the Turkish Consul General Mustafa Türker Ari , and the German Federal Minister of Education Annette Schavanand the Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg Winfried Kretschmann .

The building was built according to designs by the architect and city planner Susanne Gross from Cologne . The old synagogue in Ulm, destroyed in the November pogroms in 1938 , was just a few meters away . In front of the new Ulm building, only the Stuttgart synagogue was rebuilt in Württemberg after the Second World War .

“The synagogue and the Jewish community center are combined in a single building. The compact cuboid stands freely on the square. The position is based on the story: on the night of the pogrom in 1938, the former synagogue, which was enclosed in the roadside development of the Weinhof, was destroyed. After the Second World War, a building of profane use was built on the gap. So the synagogue lost its traditional place in the center of the city of Ulm. The building of the current synagogue has opened a new plot of land. As if the synagogue had taken a step forward from its former position, it has regained its location. Without a structural seam, it stands as a solitaire on the Weinhof "

- Susanne Gross

In the southeast corner of the new building is the so-called "Jerusalem window" with a pattern of stars of David . The Strauss family , who came from Ulm and fled to Palestine before National Socialism, donated the Torah shrine for the synagogue . Mr. Widerker Junior donated the Torah scroll together with his wife .

The rabbi in Ulm is Shneur Trebnik .
