The old scale as today in the Braunschweiger precincts Neustadt is seen is a 1994 completed detailed reconstruction of the original building from 1534, which by several bombing raids during the Second World War , in particular by the air raid on October 15, 1944 was destroyed .

architecture

With its height of 21 m, the "Alte Waage" is the largest and most imposing half-timbered house in the city. The building is a free-standing, multi-storey half-timbered building. There is a mezzanine between the ground floor and the two upper floors. All floors protrude about one meter above the ground floor, i.e. In other words, they protrude beyond the floor plan of the lowest storey, which used to be quite common in half-timbered houses and was primarily for representative reasons. On the roof there are three large bay windows with hatches to the attic. In addition, the house has two large gates, through which carts used to have to drive in and out to weigh their loads before they were allowed to offer them in the city.

history

origin

The original half-timbered house was built in 1534 as a warehouse and weighing house in the Braunschweiger Neustadt on the Wollmarkt , only a few meters away from the Andreas Church.

use

In 1671 the "old scales" were no longer used as such, as a new one had been built. The building then fell into disrepair over the decades. It was not until 1854 that it was extensively restored by the ducal court building officer Friedrich Maria Krahe , a son of the architect Peter Joseph Krahe , although little attention was paid to the historical building fabric. Krahe had some far-reaching changes made, especially on the facade, for example the compartments , which until then had been artfully and visibly filled with bricks, were plastered in white.

With renewed restoration measures between 1937 and 1939, the Kraheschen changes were largely reversed. After this work was completed, the building served as a home for the Hitler Youth (HJ) until it was destroyed in 1944 .

destruction

The Alte Waage was initially hardly damaged by bombing during the Second World War. However, on February 10, 1944, she received several direct hits. The remains of the building were eventually lost in the firestorm of the October 15, 1944 bombing . Remaining rubble was removed after the end of the war, the property was leveled and used as a parking lot and marketplace for decades.

reconstruction

The reconstruction was not started until 1991. Some of the original parts of the building were cataloged and stored, and the original building plans were used. The reconstruction was carried out as true to the original as possible. B. in the framework only wood connections, but no nails or screws were used. The reconstruction was completed in 1994 and the Alte Waage has been back at its original location ever since. Today it serves as an administration and training building for the Braunschweig Adult Education Center.
