The Alteburg is a Celtic settlement in the area of Biebergemünd in the Main-Kinzig district in Hesse . It towers over the Kasselgrund 3.5 kilometers south of Biebergemünd-Kassel on the Hoppesberg.

It is a ring wall system ( hill fort ) with two gates, which is surrounded by a ditch and was surrounded by a stone wall. The fortification was less pronounced in the eastern part of the complex. Archaeological finds from the Alteburg are exhibited in the Biebergrund Museum in Biebergemünd-Bieber . The fortifications were partially reconstructed by the Biebergemünd History Association. The Alteburg covers an area of 500 by 150 meters. In the center there were living quarters made of wood and clay. Charcoal remains could be dated to the 6th century BC.
The facility was geophysically examined in 1999 and 2000. On this basis an excavation was carried out by the Hessian State Office for Monument Preservation . Pre-Celtic finds were also made here. In addition, remains of Roman vessels from the 4th or early 5th and charcoal remains from the 8th century AD were found. From this it is concluded that this settlement site was also inhabited in pre- and post-Celtic times. In 2004 the Alteburg was archaeologically examined by the University of Mainz .

A cultural trail “In the footsteps of the Celts” leads around the Alteburg today, and it is located on the Celtic Road .
Relation to the place name of Kassel
It is believed that the name of the neighboring village of Kassel ( Cassela ) derives from the castle complex . In the Middle Ages, castellas and royal courts were referred to as “castella”.
