The Altenburger peasant costume is distributed in the former eastern district of the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg , which corresponds to today's eastern Thuringia Altenburger Land and some places around Ronneburg in the district of Greiz . It was voted the 2011 costume of the year . In June 2012, the German traditional costume festival with a traditional costume parade took place in Altenburg , after the German traditional costume day took place there in 2011 .

background

The slightly hilly Altenburger Land in the transition from the Leipzig lowland bay to the Erzgebirge foothills is located in the natural area of the Altenburg-Zeitz Loess Hills . In addition to the Magdeburg Börde, it has the most fertile soils in Germany, but the Altenburger Land has more favorable precipitation conditions for agriculture. Thus the Altenburg farmers were among the richest of all, which was expressed in the large, often representative four-sided courtyards as well as in the equally representative costume .

Costume

The costumes are often referred to as Malcher and March costumes. This is derived from the names most frequently used by the Altenburg farmers at the time, namely Melchior (Malcher) and Marie (Marche). The beginnings of the Altenburg costume, which remained almost unchanged until the 17th century, are in Wendish . Because of the wealth of the farmers, the costume was very expensive. It originated under the influence of the Spanish clothing fashion of the 16th century. It received one last small modification after the Thirty Years War . Only the women's costume changed around 1830, it became generally darker. The most famous costumes are the festive costumes, but there were also costumes for everyday life.

Some parts are unique in Germany, such as the Hormt as the oldest part. It is made of gold-plated silver and is a kind of bridal crown . Furthermore, parts of the women's costume are a multitude of woven ribbons made of silk as well as pearl embroidery, the bib and the drawn skirts with many small folds, as well as the hood, a headgear. Typical for men are, for example, wide suede trousers, a long coat and a lid that actually seems too small as a hat.
