The Altenburg Town Hall (2017)

The Altenburger Rathaus is the town hall of the city of Altenburg in the east of Thuringia . It is the seat of the city administration and is one of the most important Renaissance townhouses in Germany.

architecture

The town hall is a three-storey, rectangular building on a corner plot on the south side of the Altenburg market square. The facade is regularly structured by windows and cornices . In addition, some windows are provided with window gables. At the front there is an octagonal stair tower in the middle. It has a rectangular base and is crowned by a curved hood. Furthermore, two corner bay windows are attached to the front, as was also common in Saxon town halls of that time (e.g. in Leipzig and Torgau ). On the bay windows there are relief representations of Bible scenes, Saxon dukes and erots . The three portals of the town hall are arched and framed with columns. There are gaff heads in the gables .

The Ratskeller is located on the ground floor . It has groin vaults that rest on columns with figurative capitals .

history

The town hall was built between 1561 and 1564. The plans for this came from Nikolaus Gromann and the construction was led by Caspar Böschel . All sculptures in and around the town hall comes from the workshop of Hermann Werner in Gotha and are partly based on Italian models. The town hall was renovated for the first time in 1663, followed by a second restoration in 1864 . In 1923/1924 an extension was added for the city savings bank, which is stylistically consistent with the town hall.
