The old cemetery was a cemetery in Durlach (which is now part of the city of Karlsruhe ).

history

The former cemetery of Durlach was first mentioned in 1577. The cemetery was in front of the Durlach city wall and extended to the church of St. Peter and Paul. Even in its early days, the cemetery had to be expanded three times because it quickly became too small due to the population growth. In 1862 the cemetery was expanded one more time and for the last time. The last construction work was carried out in 1892. In 1898 the city council decided to close the cemetery in favor of a new one. In 1902 the new Durlach cemetery was opened. By 1913, 100 graves and a few monuments had survived. The cemetery chapel was used by the Old Catholic community until the Second World War.

Nikolauskapelle

The Nikolauskapelle is located by the old cemetery. The chapel was first mentioned in 1535. In 1689 the chapel burned down completely. The ruin was only rebuilt in 1712.

Todays use

The former old cemetery was rebuilt and partially leveled after the Second World War . The site has now been converted into a park with a playground . The Basler-Tor-Brunnen by Karlsruhe artist Ulrich J. Sekinger has been located right next to the former cemetery area since 1988 .
