The Old Port of Portsoy is a port facility in the Scottish village of Portsoy in the Council Area of Aberdeenshire . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Furthermore, together with 10 Shorehead , the Corf Warehouse , a workshop and the Old Co-Operative Grain Store, it is part of a category A monument ensemble .

history

The Atlas Blaeu , which was compiled in the 1660s, shows the village of Portsoy, but no port facility. This harmonizes with the presumed establishment of the port around 1692 by Patrick Ogilvie of Boyne . In return, Ogilvy did not have to pay any taxes between 1701 and 1720 when the material was shipped from his quarry. Fortification work took place in 1724. Lewis Alexander Grant-Ogilvy, 5th Earl of Seafield , built a new port facility not far from the Old Port between 1825 and 1828, which was severely damaged by storms in 1839 and 1842. After the storm in 1842, only the old harbor was used. The port also served international trade. So the fish trade with the Baltic States was pursued there.

The old harbor that is preserved today is probably largely the result of a comprehensive revision in 1884.

description

The harbor is on the south bank of the Moray Firth . It consists of a straight pier and a roughly L-shaped pier, which forms the sea-side boundary. Both piers delimit an elongated harbor basin. Its masonry consists of quarry stone and vertically laid stone blocks in the upper layers. The bollards are made of stone.
