Old Market (Magdeburg)
The Old Market is the market square of the city of Magdeburg . The old market is registered as a monument area in the local monument register under registration number 094 82654 .
General
The shape of the Old Market has been a model for the establishment of other markets under Magdeburg law since the 12th century . The term age was introduced and retained to distinguish it from the Neuer Markt , today's Domplatz . The name was first used towards the end of the 13th century.
history
The old market represents the core of the merchant settlement mentioned for the first time in 965. Despite the heavy destruction during the Thirty Years' War and the Second World War , the basic shape of the square was retained. After 1631 and 1945 almost all the buildings on the square had to be completely rebuilt. The side fronts of the square were created in 1954/55 based on designs by the architects Johannes Kramer and Max Wiegleb .
