location

The historical house signs are located in a passage of the house Alter Markt 12, 13 from the Alter Markt to the west-lying Schwertfegergasse , directly at the exit to the cellar vault Buttergasse .

Plant and history

The 14 house symbols and a city coat of arms are the preserved house symbols of buildings formerly in Magdeburg's old town , which were demolished in the 19th century and stored in the courtyard of the Museum of Cultural History or destroyed and recovered from the rubble in the Second World War . However, some of the house signs are copies. The house signs date from the time after the city was destroyed in 1631 and are considered the last evidence of the original splendid baroque buildings in Magdeburg's old town. In the local register of monuments , the house signs and the city coat of arms are listed as architectural monuments under registration number 094 06418.

House sign wall 1976

Due to the severe destruction of Magdeburg's old town and the subsequent rebuilding of the city, which did not adhere to the established structure, the original locations of the house signs were no longer available. Architects, preservationists and the sculptor Eberhard Roßdeutscher therefore came up with the plan to integrate the rescued pieces into a house wall. The wall was then erected outdoors on the northern edge of the Alter Markt, north of the Eulenspiegel fountain. It already included the 14 house signs and served as a connecting element between the entrance to Magdeburg Information and the Buttergasse wine cellar. The wall was completed on May 8, 1969.

After the political turning point in 1989 , however, the area was redesigned. A savings bank branch and a market hall were created. The house sign wall was removed and the house signs were then moved to their current location in a new wall in the stairwell. There was also another house sign, which had been stored at Paul Schuster GmbH until then . The work to create the new wall was finished in May 2001.

The pieces are arranged irregularly on the south wall of the passage. On the left is a stone slab on which the meaning of the ensemble is explained. The board is labeled with the text:

THESE OLD HOUSE
SIGNS ADORNED THE HOUSES
OF THE RENAISSANCE
AND THE BAROQUE
THEY WERE RECOVERED FROM THE REMAINS
OF THE CITY, DESTROYED ON JANUARY 16, 1945
