legend

According to legend, Eulenspiegel, known as Schalk, was asked to do something strange while visiting the city. He then announced that he would fly from the arbor of the town hall. Many citizens of Magdeburg are said to have gathered in the old market to see it fly. Till Eulenspiegel then stood on the arbor and, to the great astonishment of those present, made flight movements with his arms. Laughing, he broke off the effort and said, “I thought there was no greater fool in the world than I was; now I can see that almost the whole city is full of fools; for even though you all said you could fly, I didn't believe it. I am neither a goose nor a bird, and I have neither wings nor feathers without which nobody can fly; now you can clearly see that it was a lie. "
