It is located on the west side of the Old Market in the center of Magdeburg's old town .

Design and history

The fountain was created in 1970 by the Magdeburg sculptor Heinrich Apel . The fountain is reminiscent of the episode of the Eulenspiegel legend set in Magdeburg.

The outside of the fountain's basin is decorated with floral motifs. In the middle there is a round pillar on which there are water-spouting citizens' heads. The pillar is crowned by the figure of Till Eulenspiegel . The laughing Eulenspiegel looks stooped in the direction of the town hall . The pillar bears the golden inscription HIC FVIT .

In 1989, a stamp was issued in the GDR with a picture of the Eulenspiegel fountain.

In the local register of monuments , the fountain is listed as a monument under registration number 094 70996 .

According to legend, Eulenspiegel, known as Schalk, was asked to do something strange while visiting the city. He then announced that he would fly from the arbor of the town hall. Many citizens of Magdeburg are said to have gathered in the old market to see it fly. Till Eulenspiegel then stood on the arbor and, to the great astonishment of those present, made flight movements with his arms. Laughing, he broke off the effort and said, “I thought there was no greater fool in the world than I was; now I can see that almost the whole city is full of fools; for even though you all said you could fly, I didn't believe it. I am neither a goose nor a bird, and I have neither wings nor feathers without which nobody can fly; now you can clearly see that it was a lie. "
