The Magdeburg Christmas Market takes place every year in the Saxony-Anhalt state capital Magdeburg on the Old Market in front of the backdrop of the Old Town Hall , the Johanniskirche and the Magdeburg Rider . It begins on the Monday after the Sunday of the Dead and lasts until December 30th. Over 2 million people visit the around 160 stalls at the Christmas market . These include around 50 dealers with a wide variety of offers, almost a dozen mulled wine huts, over 50 snack stands and around 16 showmen's businesses.

history

The Magdeburg Christmas market goes back to a late medieval sales fair, which gave Magdeburgers the opportunity to stock up on food before winter. In the middle of the 20th century it became a pre-Christmas custom. At the beginning it took place in the area of the old market. After the bombing in 1945, it was moved to Leiterstrasse . However, in the 1970s it was moved back to the Alter Markt and also to the Central Square. After the development of the central square in 1995 with the Allee Center , it has only taken place on the Alter Markt since then.

Culinary

In addition to the usual national dishes on the Christmas market, you can also find local specialties, such as Magdeburg kale (also brown cabbage ), which in the Börde is usually prepared with Bregenwurst or Kassler. According to a recipe from 1924, the Lemsdorfer Lümmel is made by a butcher in Magdeburg. It has been very popular among guests at the market for several years. Also popular is Magdeburg's traditional mulled wine culture, which surprises with almost a dozen mulled wine huts.
