Magdeburg's inner city was rebuilt in the 1950s in the style of socialist classicism after it was largely destroyed in the Second World War . It was given a large central square between Otto-von-Guericke-Straße west of the main train station and the banks of the Elbe . This should be completed by a high-rise tower on the banks of the Elbe. This tower house could not be realized under the economic conditions in the GDR until 1989. Immediately after the fall of the Wall in the GDR , the city therefore began redesigning the central square. The main aim was to upgrade and revitalize the city center and to close the existing urban development gaps. In a workshop in February 1990, the first planning ideas came up that came close to the project later realized with the Allee-Center. In 1992 the first urban design ideas competition took place. On the basis of the resulting utilization concept, the city awarded the contract to build the new development in 1995. The Ulrichshaus was built to the west of the north-south axis of the Breite Weg , to the east of which the Allee Center was built on an area of around 245 by 90 meters up to the banks of the Elbe. With the completion of the center, Magdeburg's inner city received a new urban dominant feature at this point, which reduces the previously oversized street space on the Breite Weg in this area and reduces it to inner-city dimensions.

The foundation stone for the Allee Center was laid on April 16, 1997. When it opened on September 30, 1998, the Allee-Center had 110 shops on an area of 25,000 m². In addition to the sales area on two floors, there are also 23 apartments and around 7,000 m² of office space in the building. The basement was opened on March 30, 2006. Since then, the Allee-Center has a sales area of 35,000 m² and houses 150 shops. The center is operated by the Hamburg company ECE Projektmanagement . In the opinion of the art historian Thomas Topfstedt , it contributed significantly to the revitalization of Magdeburg's city center together with the neighboring Ulrichshaus.

Well in the basement

The building is located in the center of Magdeburg, near the main train station and the Magdeburger Ring . The Elbe flows about 200 m east of the building . A short distance away is the City-Carré , another large shopping center. The parking garage of the Allee-Center has 1,300 parking spaces and can be reached from Schleinufer. In addition, with three stops in the immediate vicinity, the center is very well connected to Magdeburg's local public transport . Around the building there are bicycle parking facilities for around 180 bicycles in the form of leaning bars, as well as some mobile bicycle racks from retailers.

shops

The retail chains represented in the Allee-Center include the electronics store Saturn , an H&M branch, New Yorker , Pimkie , Bench , dm-drogerie markt , Rewe and a Thalia store. There are also many other grocery stores, jewelry and cosmetics stores, service providers, cafés and clothing stores. Exhibitions, fashion shows and concerts take place regularly in the basement. In the middle of the lower floor there is also a fountain with several seating options. At Christmas time there is a large artificial Christmas tree at this point.

Due to the central location and the small number of historically grown shops in the city center of Magdeburg, the Allee-Center is one of the largest shopping destinations in the city and the region.
