Alter Platz (Klagenfurt am Wörthersee)
The Alte Platz in Klagenfurt is one of the main squares of the city alongside the Neuer Platz .
history
When, under Bernhard von Spanheim, Klagenfurt was relocated from Glanau to today's old town and elevated to the status of the city in the middle of the 13th century , the Alte Platz was created as its main square along the east-west connection from Völkermarkt to Villach . The square ended on the east side at what was then the Völkermarkter Tor, while it widens to the west in a funnel shape to the Golden Goose (Alter Platz 31), which is considered the oldest building in Klagenfurt's old town and closes the square on this side. The more important north-south connection from St. Veit and Friesach to the Loibl crossed the square via today's Wiener Gasse and Kramergasse. At that time it was simply referred to as the place .
With the expansion of the city in the 16th century, which gave the old town its present-day appearance, the Neue Platz was built south of Kramergasse as a large and rectangular representative square, which was then known as the Lower Square , and the Old Square, in contrast, as the Upper Square . The designation Alter and Neuer Platz was only used later. From 1914 to 1925 the Alte Platz was called Kaiser-Wilhelm-Platz in honor of the German Emperor Wilhelm II .
The Golden Goose probably served as the town hall in the past . From 1737–1918 the town hall was located in the Palais Welzer (Alter Platz 1) before it moved to the Neuer Platz in the Palais Orsini-Rosenberg .
Buildings and works of art
The plague column has been located on the southwest side at Alter Platz 28 since 1965 , which was previously located on Heiligengeistplatz .
On the southwest side, at the passage to the country house , two houses were combined to form Palais Goëss (Neuer Platz 3) in the 18th century .
The writer and politician Karl Morré was born in the Supersberg house (Alter Platz 4) in 1832 .
