The Old Town Hall or Palais Welzer in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee is located on the Alter Platz . It was built in the 17th century by the Welzer family as a city palace. From 1737 it served as the town hall and was rebuilt in 1739. In 1918 the town hall was relocated to what was then Palais Rosenberg, today's New Town Hall . The old town hall has been owned by the Orsini-Rosenberg family since then .

Building description

The palace is one of the largest structures on the square. It is three stories. The front side of the square dates from the 17th century and has a pseudo- rustic on the ground floor and a round-arched and angularly framed portal. Its capitals are ionizing and stand on vases with lion head reliefs. Pillars and a console in the top of the portal support the entablature with a roof-like projecting attachment. There is a relief of the Rosenberg coat of arms above the portal.

The side ends of the building have curved corner reinforcements that come up against a protruding eaves cornice. The cornice is interrupted in the middle, in the area above the portal. Above is a gable with a clock.

The windows have a simple ornament from profiled lintels. On the wall above the portal is a fresco by Josef Ferdinand Fromiller from 1739: Justitia standing on a false console, with the coats of arms of Carinthia and Klagenfurt on her sides .

A wide, barrel-vaulted driveway leads from the portal to the 17th century arcade courtyard. The arcade spandrels on the ground floor are decorated with circles with stars in mortar technique. The arcades have stilted cross vaults. The balustrade on the first floor consists of diagonally placed bricks.
